6 Steps To Evaluate Your Work-Life Balance

Work to Live or Live to Work?

As human beings, we need to serve a purpose. Having a workplace to attend every day gives a sense of meaning, support from colleagues makes you feel included and seen, and the satisfaction of mastering tasks/situations helps you grow and boost self-esteem.

Work-life has never been more important, post-covid, high inflation, and more expensive bills wherever you look.

It’s no news that your life at work hugely impacts your personal life (and vice versa). But there’s one question I can’t get out of my head: To what extent should we let this happen? I mean, everyone is working long hours these days, right? And we all have to make sacrifices at home to be successful at work, or am I wrong?

According to research from Harvard Business Review, it’s important to constantly evaluate your work-life situations and adjust to your personal life.

6 steps to help you understand your own work-life balance:

  1. PAUSE and think about your priorities and sacrifices. How are your demands at work affecting your personal life? It’s also about understanding your rights at work.

  2. YOUR FEELINGS COUNT. Thinking about your answers in step 1, how does this make you feel? Acknowledging that your feeling count can help you make the right priorities in your work-life.

  3. REPRIORITISE. From steps 1 and 2 you better understand which sacrifices you must make to become a happier and healthier you both at work and home.

  4. FIND ALTERNATIVES. How would you love your days to be like, if you could decide?

  5. CREATE THE CHANGES. Which small changes can you make at work that will also improve your personal life? Eg: not answering emails during the weekend or having a decent lunch break?

  6. SWITCH OFF. Holidays and breaks from work are not a luxury, but a necessity. You’ll be able to evaluate your life at work from a distance, and it’s also said to reduce stress and increase productivity at work – so win-win!

Implementation of new ways of living takes time, so don’t stress but move forward at your own pace.

Good Luck xx
