Basic Granola
Finding a granola containing only healthy nutrients, and doesn’t cost an arm and a leg, is pretty much the same as looking for a needle in a haystack.
Granolas and cereals are particularly good at using healthwashing as sales methods to beat competitors on the store shelves. In other words; misleading people with health claims, while in reality trying to cover up (a lack of) something…
Years ago, I used to make my own granola, what happened, I don’t know. But it recently hit me that it was about time to continue this rather delicious habit.
The truth is, making granola yourself is so easy, and it saves you lots of money. A typical why-haven’t-I-done-this-before- activity.
This time, I wanted to make a very basic recipe so you can add or remove whatever you’d prefer or have in your cupboards.
INGREDIENTS
200 g oats
200 g rye flakes*
200 g barley flakes*
2 tsp cinnamon
2 pinches of sea salt
100 g apple juice
140 g honey
1 tbsp butter
25 g brown sugar (optional)
*Usually to be found at health and wellness retailers.
INSTRUCTIONS
Heat the oven to 150 degrees, fan. Find two baking trays and cover them with parchment paper.
Mix apple juice, honey, butter, cinnamon and salt in a big bowl.
In a second bowl, mix oats, barely, rye and brown sugar.
Add the dry ingredients to the bowl with liquids and stir to coat well.
Spread the mixture out on the baking trays evenly.
Bake for approximately 16-20 minutes, stir every eight minutes.
The granola is done when the mixture is golden brown. It will probably still feel wet when coming out of the oven, but will dry as it cools.
Add nuts and/or dried fruit.
Store in an airtight container in room temperature for about one month.
