How I kept my healthy eating habits after pregnancy

Let’s be honest, guys; having a baby is overwhelming. That innocent, tiny creature is dependent on you all day, every day and I couldn’t care less about the extra kilos I’ve gained or the healthy habits I had pre-pregnancy.

Before baby number 3, I did my grocery shopping in different stores to get the best foods, I was having me-time by walking, listening to podcasts in the evenings and enjoying a warm porridge for breakfast.

Now, when timing is everything (!), let’s just say that doing things in a more convenient style is a bigger priority.

So how do I keep my healthy eating habits in this period of life?

To be honest, I don’t.

My healthy lifestyle like I knew it is history. Trying to keep anything as it was is like fighting a fire by spitting on it – microscopic chances of succeeding. It doesn’t mean I must reinvent the wheel but learning how to dance in the rain. And it’s okay to take some time adjusting to a new everyday life.

But this doesn’t only apply to the life situation I find myself in. Occasionally, life hits you in the face, and once more, you are reminded of the fact that your real life, and its unpredictability, outweighs any dreams and beautifully edited reels…

The key is recognising the changes when they happen, whether it’s getting a new job, moving to a new town, illnesses (hallo pandemic!) or other incidents. We often feel like a failure when our good habits become more challenging. Recognising why you feel this way (which is not always as obvious as you might think) can be a game changer to continuing healthy eating habits.

6 tips I stick to when life takes a funny turn:

  1. Which good habits am I already doing? Focus on the great stuff you’re already doing, and start taking small steps.

  2. How has my life situation changed during the last year? Both mentally and physically. How can I accept this and move on?

  3. What are my biggest challenges right now? Cravings? Junk food? Variety in the diet?

  4. Do I need new inspiration? What kind of inspiration would help me continue my healthy habits? A new cookbook? A workout buddy?

  5. Do I need new healthy eating goals? Have I set expectations too high or too low?

  6. Where can I make room for my previous habits in my new life?

Good luck!
